0/1-10V Dimmable LED Driver is a very common dimming approach offered by many Dimmable LED Driver Manufacturers. While the 1-10V approach can be easily understood as the 10-100% of linear dimming performance, the dimming performance of < 1V range sometimes can be confusing: Some drivers would be switching-off the light output at a relatively high voltage (e.g. 0.9V) and some have the same effect at a much lower voltage (e.g. 0.1V). This is because the specification only states “Minimal Light Output” @ < 1V range. Either way, it should be mentioned that although there is no light output, this is not the same as actually Switching-Off the Driver. That is, the driver would still be running a standby operation when there is no light output. Furthermore, in order to achieve the 0V output signal to the dimmable driver(s), a pair of Live/Neutral wires from the AC Mains is required, which is the most significant difference between the 1-10V and 0-10V applications.
In order to use 1-10V to achieve desired dimming performance, it is important to make sure that the LED driver and the lighting fixture is properly matched. This is especially true in the case of Constant Current output type of applications. Assuming that a 200W LED driver and a 100W LED load are used, adjusting the 1-10V controller halfway would mean 100W output, which is the MAX of the LED load can handle. Therefore, further upward adjustment of the 1-10V controller would not result in any further brightness level change and it would appear that the controller has no response to the LED load. Similarly, assuming the same 200W LED driver and a 30W LED load are used, adjusting the 1-10V controller to the lowest level would only mean 20W output from the LED driver and it would appear that the brightness level cannot be reached to a much lower level. While 1-10V control concept is easy to understand, details like these should be considered in selecting the proper 0/1-10V LED drivers in practice.
Using Mean Well products as example
The LCM-25/40/60 series is a very easy to use selectable constant current output LED drivers,which are suitable for projects when little details of required constant current outputs are known. Besides the standard constant current outputs, the output current can be further adjusted by the variable resistor to best match the lighting fixture on-hand.
